Projects in North America
In 2008 Frontier Medical acquired Exploration Medical Services (EMS) of Canada. All of the
Canadian experience and a few of the international projects were completed by EMS prior to the
acquisition. For more information on the acquisition please click here.
Rio Tinto, Diavik Diamond Mine, Canada
A team of Physicians Assistants, nurses and advanced care paramedics have been provided
to man an on-site medical clinic near Yellowknife since 2004. The mine can have
as many as one thousand crew on location, who work both above and below the surface, all
year round. Duties include general and emergency medical care, drug and alcohol testing,
audiometry, pre-employment medicals, return to work medicals and case
management. Our medics are also part of the mine rescue team, winning a "First Place in First Aid" in
the recent mine rescue competition in Yellowknife. For most of the year the site
is only accessible by air.
Ellis Don Construction, Fort McMurray, Canada
A nurse, mobile medical clinic and associated equipment provide emergency
services and routine healthcare to this year-round construction project.
Imperial Oil, Gas plant, Canada
We provide a Mobile Treatment Centre (MTC) (3/4 ton 4X4 diesel units that are
used to treat and transport patients) and year round paramedic support to workers at an
oil pipeline facility. Advanced care services and routine healthcare are provided to the
crew along with advanced first aid training. In the summer an extra MTC is deployed to
support an exploration drilling project.
Nova Gold, Galore Creek Mining Project, Canada
A team of medics are deployed to several camps of this large remote year
round mining venture near the Yukon border. Each satellite camp, apart from
the base camp, is accessible only by helicopter.
Nuna Winter Road Services Ltd, NWT Ice Road Construction and Maintenance, Canada
A team of Emergency Medical Technicians are provided for the ice road project near Yellowknife
which is used by winter resupply convoys. Intermediate Care Paramedics are deployed at various
staging areas to take care of the medical needs and first aid requirements of the road crews and
truckers.
MGM Energy, Winter Drilling project, Inuvik NWT, Canada
EMS provided five medics and three safety coordinators for this major remote winter oil drilling
operation, where temperatures often fell to minus 50 Celsius. All sites were accessed by air
or ice road only. Winterised Mobile Treatment Centres were needed for this project and had
to be shipped by barge in the summer months prior to project start-up. In addition to
emergency and routine healthcare services for on-site personnel, journey management
was also provided.
Dome petroleum/Amoco, Offshore Beaufort Sea Drilling, Canada
From 1978 to 1986 EMS provided nurses, Physicians Assistants and paramedics to four drillships,
two barges, a dredging vessel and two base camps. Our medics also cared for diving crews
on the drillships and support vessels after having completed diving medicine courses at
the Commercial Diving Centre in Los Angeles, California. Our base camp nurse assisted
in the helicopter rescue of a downed helicopter pilot and was awarded a medal of honour
by the Canadian government. Dome Petroleum was acquired by Amoco during this contract.
Offshore Survey, Greenland
Frontier Medical mobilised a remote site medic and
emergency crash bag to provide a GP service and 24-hour
emergency trauma support for an offshore sea survey in Greenland.
